If you really want to do the job hunting thing on your own, you will want to read the recent book, Unlock the Hidden Job Market. In it the author shares insider information about what we, as recruiters, do every day. And he gives you a step by step guide to "doing it on your own."
I often append this motto to the bottom of emails to clients - "Helping you find the best candidates, not just the best job seekers." Because here is the dilemma - the best job seekers are the ones who do it frequently, i.e., not the best employees. The author writes, "Great jobs do not go to great people - they go to great job seekers." While this is true, I quickly got the impression that the strategy being proposed would be difficult for the average working individual to pull off while supporting themselves.
He goes on to say that two things will be required for you to be successful in your search:
- You will need to take a much more active role in the process than you ever have before
- You will need to learn a whole new set of job search skills
Finally, about 3/4 of the way through the book he comes clean regarding his intentions: "The hidden job market search will take much less time if you devote your full time to it. Sure you can do a hidden job market search while holding down a full time job, but instead of taking only three to five months to find the right job, it could take you as long as a year or even more to pull it off."
